We made this in San Francisco, CA - September 2016.

We had mad fun rocking at The Elbo Room with the brothers Tall Black Guy and Stro Elliot.

Inspired, we linked up in the lab at Teeko’s house the next day. We were vibing out to some records Teeko got from the homie Computer Jay. KT heard a drum break and was like “Yo! Let’s chop those drums”. He then sampled and chopped the drum break into Maschine. Teeko decided to take KT to brother J1’s old crib (R.I.P) aka “The Mug Push crib” aka “The House of Rising Funk”. There, KT recorded the bass live on the Maschine pads before he left town. Teeko took the session back to his house, added the piano, guitar, strings, effects, and arrange the beat.

When Teeko sent the track back to KT, they both agreed that it sounded like something Anderson Paak would sound dope over. Teeko threw on two different acapellas, one from Anderson Paak’s “Come Down” and Snoop’s verse from The Eastsidaz “G’d Up” as a reference. We loved how it felt, so Teeko added the talkbox and the “Re-freak” was born.
