Disco D

An O'Jays song came on the radio the other today..

Then I had to listen to 50 cent's "Ski Mask Way" joint after that.

My mans Disco D produced that joint. Many folks probably wouldn't have known that because Disco D is mostly known for his contribution in Detroit's Ghettotech music during the early 00s. He was also a Hiphop head and producer. Great dude.

David Shayman started DJing in 1995 as a student attending Pioneer High School - which was the local rival to my school, Huron High. I remember how hype Dave was about Detroit Booty/Ghettotech music. We all loved booty music around that time. As Booty Music invaded warehouses, house parties, and dance clubs in Detroit , Dave found his lane in music and started DJing and creating Ghettotech after seeing DJ Assault and DJ Godfather rock live at a local rave.

Here's one of Disco D's mixes:

Here's one of his albums:

In 2002, the same year AML released our debut album Sweats & Kicks, Disco D had just graduated from University of Michigan's business school. He moved to Brooklyn, NYC after graduating to further pursue his dream career of producing Hiphop, R&B, Dancehall, and Ghettotech music. He went on to make a name for himself producing records for 50 cent, Da Brat, Lords of Acid, Nina Sky, and Princess Superstar.

Shayman signed his first record deal at 17. He founded his own label, GTI (Ghettotech Institute), at 19. At an age where most of his peers were adjusting to college or life after high school, Shayman was a DJ on the Ann Arbor club circuit, releasing his own records on his own label (2001’s Straight Out Tha Trunk) and receiving national press exposure, all while earning honors grades at the University of Michigan’s highly touted business school. Dave also was a huge influence in founding Ann Arbor electronic music label Ghostly International. Before then, Dave was also around when Athletic Mic League was working on tracks. He always showed us love.

On January 23, 2007, Disco D lost his struggle with a bipolar disorder and committed suicide at age 26.

R.I.P to an Ann Arbor, Michigan music legend.

Salute bro.
